World Cup 2015: Pakistan, Shahid Afridi, Umar Akmal, make new records

World Cup 2015: Pakistan, Shahid Afridi, Umar Akmal, make new records: Pakistan entered Brisbane cricket ground with a ‘Do or Die’ situation in their hands. A win would keep their hopes alive to qualify into the next stage of the world cup while losing today would have meant that Misbah and his men should start packing their bags for home. The start was disastrous, just four runs on the board and both Pakistani openers were already back in the hut. Just like everyday, Misbah had to build the Pakistan innings with no or little contributions from his partners. Wahab’s power-hitting at the back end helped Pakistan post a respectable total in the end.

Zimbabwe had a very shaky start against the 7 foot GIANT Mohammad Irfan, losing two early wickets. Hamilton, Taylor and Williams worked hard to control the damage caused but fiery Wahab Riaz had other plans today and his four wickets during and after the batting power play added nothing but more troubles for Zimbabweans. In the end, Pakistan registered their first win of the tournament by 20 runs.
Here is a CricTrcker stats pack from the game today:
  • Leader of the Leaders – Misbah-ul-Haq has now scored 5712* runs as Pakistan’s Captain across all formats of the game after his hard-working 73 today surpassing the Great Imran Khan’s 5655 runs for ‘Most Runs by a Pakistan Captain’.
  • Birthday, Duckday – Shahid Afridi became only the 2nd batsman after Ian Bell in 2007 to register a DUCK on his birthday on a WC game.
  • 2 – Number of Pakistan batsmen who have scored a WC 50 after coming in at number 8 or lower. Wahab Riaz with his match-saving 54* became the 2nd after Abdul Razzaq’s 62 vs New Zealand at Pallekele in 2011.
  • 40 – Not just Misbah’s age but also the number of half-centuries he has now scored in ODIs without converting one into a century, 15 clear of Andrew Jones behind him on the list.
  • 30 – Number of ODI DUCKS for Shahid Afridi now, 29 of them came when playing for Pakistan surpassing Wasim Akram’s 28 – Most for a Pakistani Batsman.
  • One Short from Glory – Umar Akmal grabbed 5 catches behind the stumps today. Had he taken one more, he would have equaled Adam Gilchrist’s record for Most Catches by a WK in a WC Game.
  • A Pakistan’s New – Umar’s 5 catches today were the MOST by a Pakistani WK in a world cup game. Also the joint-most for a Pakistani in ODIs.
  • Not Good but Equal – Umar Akmal’s 5 dismissals today were joint-most by a Pakistani WK in a WC game. Rashid Latif vs New Zealand at Lahore affected the same (5; 4 catches, 1 stumping) in 1996.
  • An All-Round Effort- Wahab Riaz 54* & 4/45 became the 1st Pakistani all-rounder to score a 50 and take more than 3 wickets in the same WC game.
  • ZERO – Number of times Zimbabwe has beaten Pakistan in a World Cup game. Pakistan has won 5 times out of the 6 meetings, one match was abandoned due to rain.
  • 9 out of 10- Number of wickets shared by Pakistan’s left-arm pacers today (Irfan 4, Wahab 4, Rahat 1) – a first for any team.
  • Oldest Winner- Misbah-ul-Haq (40 years & 277 days) became the oldest ODI Captain to win a WC game. Also, the only to win after aged 40.
  • Best than the Rest – Pakistan successfully defended their score of 235 today – lowest total successfully defended by any team in this world cup.
  • First on March 1– This is Pakistan’s first win in an ODI on March 1. Rain abandoned the fixture in 1992 while they lost to India in 2003.
  • Afridi the Influence- Shahid Afridi now equals Inzamam-ul-Haq’s record to be involved in most ODI wins among players from Pakistan – 215 wins.

bangladesh want to 1st win against aghanistan

Even as Ireland were hunting down West Indies in Nelson, in a quiet corner of quiet Manuka Oval in quiet Canberra, Bangladesh were going through a three-hour intense training session. Bangladesh lost both their World Cup warm-up games, one of them to Ireland, and their first opponents in the tournament are Afghanistan, who beat them in the Asia Cup last March in the only previous ODI between the two sides.
Bangladesh have not played an international game for two-and-a-half months now, but going by this afternoon's workout, they are putting in the effort in training. Barring Tamim Iqbal, who is feeling his way back from a knee injury and only faced throwdowns and some offbreaks, the other Bangladesh batsmen had long stints in the side nets just outside Manuka Oval against both pace and spin. The fast bowlers ran in hard in the heat and tested their team-mates' techniques.
The injury-prone Mashrafe Mortaza eased into his spell, bowling off a few paces at the start, and clutching his right shoulder on a few occasions as he loosened up. He was soon sprinting in from his usual run-up, although he was the slowest of the four Bangladesh pace bowlers. He also bowled the shortest spell among the four, choosing to have a short batting stint after that.
Rubel Hossain seemed the quickest, sending Mahmudullah's leg stump out of the ground with a sharp yorker. He also found some swing, while the two young ones, Taskin Ahmed and Al-Amin Hossain hit the surface hard and generated rapid bounce. The well-built Taskin, especially, was quite a sight when viewed from just behind the batsman as he pounded in.
Rubel and Al-Amin bowled in tandem, while Mortaza and Taskin took charge in another net. Spinners operated in the remaining two practice nets. Team manager and former Bangladesh captain Khaled Mahmud sent down a handful of his mediums as well, even going past the outside edge a couple of times.
Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Soumya Sarkar and Mahmudullah comprised the first batch of batsmen while Shakib Al Hasan, Nasir Hossain, Sabbir Rahman and Mortaza formed the second. Anamul Haque came on in the final batch along with some of the bowlers.
After some initial discomfort in tackling the pace and bounce of a couple of the strongly-built local net bowlers, the short Mominul went on to play some solid pulls, picking up the lengths early and moving quickly into position.
Watched by the odd group of children returning from school, Mushfiqur batted the longest, in the net just adjacent to the pavement. There were some instinctive punches on the up off the middle of the bat along with some top-edged hooks. Soon, he started batting in mock situations. Twelve needed off four balls. Fine leg up, called out Taskin before starting to run in. Mushfiqur calmly walked across and connected on the scoop off a full delivery. He did it against Mortaza too. With two needed off one, however, Taskin fired in a yorker, which Mushfiqur missed. Bangladesh will be hoping all the work prevents another misfire against Afghanistan.

huge win for newzealand against srilanka

New Zealand plundered 77 in their first 10 overs and 102 in their last 10 as they opened their World Cup campaign with a powerful batting performance at the Hagley Oval. It left Sri Lanka chasing 332, but they may have had to crane their necks at an even more imposing target had their bowlers not managed to exert some sort of control during the middle 30 overs, during which they picked up four wickets and conceded only 5.07 runs per over.

But the damage done by Brendon McCullum at the start of the innings and by Corey Anderson at the end left the biggest impact upon the scorecard. Lasith Malinga, returning to ODI cricket for the first time since undergoing ankle surgery in September, showed the effects of his layoff in spraying the ball around and conceding 84 from his 10 overs, and his new-ball and death-overs partner Nuwan Kulasekara took even more punishment, leaking 78 in eight. Sri Lanka's fielding did them no favours either. Four catches went down, all at junctures when a wicket could have swayed the momentum of the innings.
McCullum looked in terrifying touch right from the start, flat-batting both opening bowlers for fours through the covers in the first couple of overs. Martin Guptill, who faced most of the bowling initially, picked up successive fours off Kulasekara in the fifth over, when he strayed onto his pads and overcompensated with width outside off. Malinga troubled both openers with his slower ball, which dipped confusingly late in its flight path and on one occasion prompted an lbw appeal when it hit McCullum's pad on the full.
Malinga's radar, though, was all over the place, and McCullum dispatched two full-tosses to the leg-side boundary in the eighth over. In between, Malinga sent down a no-ball on the pads, which McCullum clipped for another four, and a slower-ball free-hit right in the slot for McCullum to clear his front leg and launch for a straight six. Twenty three runs came off that over, and McCullum had scored 22 of them - only Virat Kohli, during his blazing century in Hobart three years ago, had scored more in an over against Malinga.
Sri Lanka turned to Rangana Herath in the 10th over, and he immediately brought some measure of normalcy to proceedings before getting McCullum to hole out by daring to go after a ball that wasn't quite full enough to hit over the top with full control. It gripped, turned, and McCullum didn't quite middle it; long-off still took it right on the edge, while threatening to topple over the rope.
Suranga Lakmal came on as Sri Lanka's fourth-change bowler, but immediately looked the most impressive of their seamers, producing outswing from a fullish length to get Kane Williamson edging his first ball, only for the ball to bounce off the diving Kumar Sangakkara's right mitt. In near-identical circumstances six overs later, Sangakkara managed to pouch Guptill.
Williamson wasn't batting with his usual fluency - early in his innings, he French-cut Lakmal for four and nearly popped a return catch to Herath - but Sri Lanka wouldn't let him leave the crease. When he was on 27, Angelo Mathews leaped at short cover and got a hand to a powerful slap off Kulasekara but couldn't quite hold on.
Williamson had doubled his score when he holed out to the legspinner Jeevan Mendis in the 34th over. Mendis held his next delivery back a touch, and released from a foot behind the crease. Ross Taylor, lunging out of his crease to flick against the turn, was beaten by dip and turn, and Sangakkara stumped him after a bit of a juggle. At the end of that over, Mendis had figures of 2 for 5 from two overs. For some reason, he didn't bowl another ball.
Anderson and Grant Elliott, the two new batsmen, took 33 from the batting Powerplay, which left New Zealand 229 for 4 at the 40-over mark. Elliott heaved Lakmal straight to deep midwicket in the 44th over, and Anderson skied the same bowler high over cover in the 46th over to give Sri Lanka a chance of restricting the score to under 300, but Mendis settled under the ball at cover and dropped the sitter.

Anderson was on 43 at that point. New Zealand were on 278. Anderson and Ronchi plundered 50 runs from the 27 balls that remained. Sri Lanka still had enough time for one more act of tragicomedy, Malinga overstepping while bowling Ronchi with a perfect yorker.

amazing stat by shahid afridi

The most experienced Pakistan cricketer at the moment, Shahid Afridi, smashed 67 off 29 balls – studded with three sixes and nine fours – against New Zealand at Wellington today in the first ODI of the two-match bilateral series.
Afridi got to his 50 in 21 balls. This is the ninth time he has scored a half-century in 21 or fewer balls.
Shahid Afridi
That no batsman has scored 50s in less than 21 balls on more than 4 occasions shows how difficult a task it is. In fact, only two batsmen have scored 50s within 21 balls more than once. Brendon McCullum has scored four times, while Mark Boucher has done it twice.

#England through to final, #India winless on tour

England made heavy weather of a small target on a WACA pitch of yore, making their way to the final against Australia on Sunday and keeping India winless on their tour of Australia. Once again their bowlers pulled India back after a decent start, keeping them down to 200 after they had been 0 for 83, but their batsmen let the up-and-down pitch play on their minds to be 5 for 66 at one point. The nuggety James Taylor and the authoritative Jos Buttler, though, rescued them with a 125-run partnership that took just 23.2 overs.
India have been no stranger to collapses on this tour, but it will hurt them that today's came after Shikhar Dhawan had finally fought through a tough period and with Ajinkya Rahane looking on course to become only the second non-Australian opener to score a century at the WACA Ground. While the two batted, the pitch looked like the normal WACA one, but once the wickets began to fall, the real monsters showed up. In one over MS Dhoni was hit on the helmet and below the knee roll from similar length. Early in the chase Ian Bell fell lbw to a similar delivery, and the other England batsmen came in with an inherent mistrust of the pitch after that.
India's bowlers made it tough for England by staying accurate, but arguably England had caused the damage in the first half. Put in, India began the day all right but, after fighting it out through the tough period, Dhawan cut at Chris Woakes with no feet, and toe-ended him through to Buttler. At 1 for 83 in the 21st over, it was a decent platform for Virat Kohli to bat at No. 3 - India have been saving him should a wicket fall early - but India's middle order fell to a familiar and unusual foe.
Almost all through the Test series in the English summer, India didn't quite figure out how to play Moeen Ali. They were caught between disdain and extreme caution, and on evidence of Friday, Moeen has the wood on them. Neither of his two next wickets - in the space of eight balls - had anything to do with the pitch. A moment after Buttler had asked the long-off to move a touch wider, Kohli looked to either clear him or beat him to his right, but couldn't do either. This time India had Raina coming in at No. 4, and he left even before his eyes would have adjusted to the bright light in Perth. He repeated his Brisbane dismissal with a premeditated charge at Moeen, and this time he managed a thick edge as opposed to the stumping at the Gabba.
It can't be easy for Ambati Rayudu, entering in the middle of another crisis. He is asked to bat at No. 3 when India start poorly, and here he would have been relegated had India lost their third wicket after the 35th over. Rayudu couldn't handle the heat that was on, handing Stuart Broad his first wicket of the series after the bowler made a good comeback from his ordinary first spell.
Rahane meanwhile had got into a flow after the edgy start. The innings depended on him and Dhoni with England giving nothing away. You could sense a wicket around the corner, and to expedite it came the batting Powerplay. On cue Rahane opened the face when Steven Finn got the ball to hold its line. Once again Dhoni was caught at the death with no recognised batsman around him. Once the pitch got Dhoni out, the rest imploded, except for some merry hitting from Mohammed Shami and Mohit Sharma, who was playing despite not being in the World Cup squad.
The 35 the two added gave them something to bowl at, and they began well. From the time Bell fell to the shooter, there was unease among England batsmen. Pressure built, and Moeen pulled out a Kohli-like dismissal off the bowling of Axar Patel. Joe Root drove hard to give Stuart Binny a tough return catch. Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara came out looking suspiciously at the pitch, and got out softly to Binny.
At 5 for 66, India looked like they could just come out with something to show for the tour, but Taylor and Buttler had other ideas. Until now it had seemed that Taylor had got stuck at one end, but in the company of Buttler he batted industriously. Around this time Ravindra Jadeja was introduced too, in the 21st over. Coming back from a shoulder injury, Jadeja didn't have quite the zing his bowling earlier had. Easy singles flowed, and with the asking rate in control the two batsmen had no problem accepting those singles.
Buttler was three when he pushed Taylor for a non-existent single. Rahane swooped in fast from cover, and threw while diving but missed the stumps. Buttler was so far that had Rahane run in with the ball it would have still been close. On such moments are games turned.
Buttler kept hitting the odd boundary off remotely loose balls without taking any risk, which gave Taylor the time to accumulate peacefully. For a situation as precarious as this, the two knocked off the remaining runs with relative ease. They hardly played an ill-advised shot, and when they did - like Taylor did against Axar in the 39th over, jumping put of the crease and then sweeping because he had been beaten in the flight - they had the rub of the green going their way. This one went for four off the bottom edge. The boundary brought the target to under 50.
England still didn't stroll through with Taylor and Buttler falling just short of the target, but that was more reminder that they are England. They eventually won with 3.1 overs to spare.

india and egland ready for battle

Big Picture
There is no need for complicated maths to work out the possible permutations from this game, no reason to worry about bonus points and net run-rates. The equation is simple. Whichever team wins on Friday will play Australia in the tri-series final on Sunday. In case of a tie or a wash-out, England go though and India miss out. Perhaps it's a good warm-up for both sides ahead of the World Cup, which features two knockout phases before the final. On recent form, England deserve to go in as favourites, after crushing India in their only previous meeting in this series, when India were skittled for 153 at the Gabba.
England's side seems fairly settled, while India appear unclear about their preferred combinations on the eve of the World Cup. India have used 15 players so far in the series compared to England's 12, and the fitness of Rohit Sharma has necessitated changes at the top of the order. Rohit is back close to full fitness, but India have decided to not risk him so close to the World Cup.
Their wash-out in Sydney against Australia robbed them of time in the middle, but has also ensured they remain alive in the tournament. But for one of these teams, Friday's game will be their last ODI before the World Cup.

In the spotlight
Seven wickets from the past two games has been a strong return for Steven Finn, who looms as an important man for England in the World Cup, given the conditions. He will find few venues in the world that offer him the kind of bounce available at the WACA, but he should not expect the pitch to do all the work for him, and finding the right length will be his challenge.
Ajinkya Rahane has made starts in all three games so far, but 33 is his best score. In Sydney he was at the crease on 28 when the match was abandoned, and he is coming off a highly encouraging Test series in which he showed he could handle the Australian conditions. With Shikhar Dhawan struggling for form, a big score as opener would really make Rahane hard to move down the order during the World Cup.
Team news
England's side is reasonably settled and there is no reason to expect changes in a knockout match.
England (possible) 1 Ian Bell, 2 Moeen Ali, 3 James Taylor, 4 Joe Root, 5 Eoin Morgan (capt), 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Ravi Bopara, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 James Anderson, 11 Steven Finn.
With Rohit not playing on the Friday, India are likely to go with the same XI that played, or hoped to play, in Sydney.
India (possible) 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Ajinkya Rahane, 3 Ambati Rayudu, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt, wk), 7 Stuart Binny, 8 Ravindra Jadeja, 9 Axar Patel, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Ishant Sharma.
Pitch and conditions
The WACA usually provides some extra bounce and pace, and the forecast for Friday is for a possible shower or storm and a top temperature of 37C.
Stats and trivia
  • England and India have met only once before in Perth, in the 1992 World Cup, when England won by nine runs
  • Ian Bell is the leading run scorer in the tournament, with 229 from just three games
  • India's leading run scorer in the series is Rohit Sharma, who has played only one match for 138
Quotes
"I think it is important to win this game given the lack of success we've had before this tour. We've built a confidence in our preparation, in the game in Brisbane and in performances leading into the start of this series. So as momentum and confidence goes I think it's quite a big game."
Eoin Morgan
"They had the psychological advantage in ODIs in England as well."
MS Dhoni makes light of the suggestion that England might have the psychological advantage after their win over India in Brisbane

Shoaib Malik, Azhar Ali, Sohail Tanvir on standby for World Cup

Karachi: Batsmen Shoaib Malik and Azhar Ali, and pace bowler Sohail Tanvir have been put on standby in the Pakistan squad for the upcoming Cricket World Cup, to be held from February 14 in Australia and New Zealand.
A source in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said that after discussions with the chief selector Moin Khan and team management in New Zealand, three players were told that their services might be required by the team during the World Cup, if needed.
"Malik, Azhar and Tanvir have been told to be on standby so that if some players have fitness issues in World Cup, the team management wants to be sure they can get quick replacements if required," the source told PTI.
He said either Malik or Azhar would accompany Tanvir if the need arose. All three are presently performing well in the ongoing national one-day cup.
"The tour selection committee has given its consent for these players but will let the board know about the final two names when required," he added.
There have been apprehensions that the tour selection committee might call up some replacements as question marks hang over the fitness of some players who are picked in the World Cup squad.
The source said Sohaib Maqsood, Ehsan Adil and Wahab Riaz were facing some fitness niggles and were being tested in New Zealand before the World Cup.
"Malik and Azhar are both on the standby list as they can also bowl," the source added.
Paceman Bilawal Bhatti has already joined the team in New Zealand after left-arm pacer Junaid Khan, who was selected in the World Cup squad, was left behind as he had suffered a hamstring injury while bowling in the training camp in Lahore.
The source said the tour selection committee had made it clear that Junaid should only be sent when he was 100 per cent fit and cleared by the medical panel of the board.
"He is presently in a rehabilitation process and resting," he said.
